ARTASTIC Scholarship Program deadline: MAR 1-3Thursday February 9, 2017
Norwalk is a wonderful city that supports the arts. Their 8th annual “Artastic” program is an award-winning special event that highlights the Cultural Arts Center’s programs and classes. High school and middle school students who reside in the City of Norwalk; attend school in Norwalk, private or public; or attend school in the Norwalk/La Mirada Unified School District are invited to enter the art competition. Each artwork submitted will be displayed on exhibit dates, and an Artist Reception will be held for all participating artists, their friends and family on Friday, March 17. Submit your best piece of work. Accepted media include: photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, prints, fashion, mixed media, and computer-generated art. All artwork must be mounted, matted, or framed. A total of $400 in scholarships will be awarded to top artists.

Welcome to the year of the Rooster! There are so many places to enjoy the Lunar New Year Festivities in SoCal. On January 28, from 11am-10pm, enjoy the festivities in the San Gabriel Mission District. On Feb 4 at 1pm, check out the 118th Annual Golden Dragon Parade & Chinese New Year Festival at Chinatown Central Plaza in Los Angeles. Also on Feb 4 from noon to 8pm, discover the Chinatown Los Angeles festivities. The scenic and breathtaking Huntington Library & Gardens is also having a celebration from Feb 4-5. Monterey Park is hosting the Alhambra Lunar New Year Festival on January 28 and 29. If you’re looking for a celebration close to the beach, Santa Monica is having a Chinese New Year at Santa Monica Place on January 28 from 2-6pm. These events are kid-friendly, have lots of festive decorations, and of course, yummy food.

This is a wonderful time of year for many reasons including festive entertainment. The La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts is featuring The Magic of Christmas. This jam-packed holiday show features 250 cast members, over 6,000 costumes and 30 festive scene changes. This all ages show has incredible musical numbers ranging from hip hop to holiday classics. This venue is only a short drive from Sunstone and features an incredible variety of shows all year round. Another wonderful entertainment venue in the area is the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts.

Get into the Halloween spirit a bit early at the city of Norwalk 33rd annual Halloween Parade! Dress up in costume for the costume contest held at 9:15AM at the corner of Pioneer Blvd and Mapledale Street. The event takes place on October 15 at 11am. It begins at the intersection of Pioneer Blvd and Mapledale Street and will conclude at Hermosillo Park. Enjoy marching bands, ghosts, goblins, and more.
